First Church's Updates
Weekly Update for First Church of the Brethren, February 9, 2026
Matthew 17:1-9
17 After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2 There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. 3 Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.
Jesus has just revealed to the disciples that he must die. Some postulate that he took the three disciples to witness His Transfiguration six days later to help prepare them for His journey – and theirs — to the cross. Some of these same experts will argue that’s what Ash Wednesday and Lent is all about… for the self-evaluation, repentance and sacrifices that are preparing ourselves for what is coming on our journey with Him.
